Is there a Season between Seasons?

You can smell it in the Air! That unmistakable smell that's puts a grin right on your face, because you know that the colorful landscape is coming. It's that smell of Autumn! A favorite Season without a doubt.

But, let's not get ahead of ourselves here...

There's a funny little stretch of time here in the mountains when summer hasn't quite let go, but you can feel something changing.

The afternoons are still warm and there's plenty of green, but the mornings feel a little different. The light is beginning to change, the grasses are taking on a hint of gold, and every now and then a cool morning fog reminds us what's waiting just around the corner. And, another bean in the jar!

For photographers, I think this is a great time to slow down and learn to "see" beyond the obvious. Not necessarily to plan out your photoshoots, but rather, be mindful of your choices. A little vision goes a long way here, as you will see below.

Afternoon Storms bring the very best of Summer with increased water flows, wildflowers and fantastic light and atmospheric conditions. It's a perfect time for landscape photography in my book!

June 3 - 6, 2027

From Golden Hour to Starlight!

I confess, I'm really excited about this one!

We're taking one of my favorite places to photograph and exploring it from an entirely different perspective. Scheduled around the New Moon for darker skies and minimal moonlight, this workshop will focus on the technical and creative sides of both Astrophotography and Long Exposure Photography along the North Carolina coast.

We'll explore the Outer Banks from North to South, photographing all of its iconic Lighthouses from Currituck to Hatteras. Historic fishing piers, rolling dunes, coastal waters, gazebos, boardwalks and plenty of unique subjects are all on tap for this Workshop. I've been photographing the Outer Banks for over 40 years and it's still among my favorite places to visit and photograph. The subject matter is endless.

During our daytime and twilight sessions, we'll dive into Long Exposure Photography, learning how shutter speed and Neutral Density filters allow us to control time and completely transform a scene. We'll smooth moving water, stretch clouds, simplify busy textures and learn how removing detail can create stronger, more expressive compositions.

We'll cover ND filter selection, exposure times, moving water and clouds, highlight control and composition, while learning when a shorter exposure may actually create a stronger image than several minutes.

We'll also devote an entire afternoon to the Fine Art of editing Long Exposures, working in both Color and Black & White and exploring tone, contrast, luminosity, atmosphere and mood.

After dark, we'll shift gears into night-sky photography, covering proper exposure, manual focusing at night, white balance, noise management, star sharpness, foreground exposure, light painting and techniques for combining the night sky with the incredible coastal subjects of the Outer Banks.

From controlling movement during the day to capturing stars after dark, we'll learn how exposure time can completely change the way a scene is interpreted — and how to use it creatively to capture something the eye can't see on its own.

Mark Denney and I have partnered up again! This time we are headed to:

​Death Valley, Alabama Hills and the Eastern Sierras! This is a perfect time to see all three dressed in their finest landscape attire! Snow capped peaks, Sand Dunes, the Salt Flats, Arches, Hot Creeks and more. It's all there and a photographers dream waiting for you!

This will be a 6 day immersive Workshop that covers some of the best in all of these areas from Sand Dunes, Sculpted and colorful rock, salt formations and snow covered peaks. We've added extra days to the workshop so that you have plenty of time to work these areas and not feel rushed. This Workshop will have field sessions planned during the best light hours and will maintain an open format so that we can adjust for the ever changing weather conditions in all of these places. We will take a deep dive on how to "see" and experiment with different lens choices and angle of view. How to focus stack, focal length blend and use Lightroom like never before. Our focus is on you and we will meet you where you are and make recommendations that will change the way you see the landscape.

Spring in Charleston March 24–28, 2027​ ​ For more Info What's not to love about Spring in Charleston? Blooming azaleas, avenues of ancient Live Oaks, coastal maritime waters and mysterious Cypress make this one of my favorite times to photograph the Low Country. During this Workshop you will learn how to control your shutter speed and exposure for stunning effects. Focus stacking for increased depth and read light for beautiful dimension in your images.

Retouching is key these days in how you shape and control light. It can literally make or break your image. If you are having trouble with your editing, this trip may be for you. This experience will include a half day of retouching demos and personal education.

Field Tips:

10 tips on shooting in the dog days of Summer:

1. Travel to the mountains! Mountains provide better light and shadows, not to mention a more pleasant working environment and diversity of subjects, including late Summer Wildflowers!
2. Hard light? No problem, think Black & White, patterns, abstract or backlighting. Shoot tighter scenes. Sunstars through the trees or pinched.
3. Rainy afternoons? Plan your trip to a mountain stream or waterfall. The next morning will likely be foggy, with good water flow and possible light rays.
4. Pop up Thunder boomers? Follow them(safe distance) for amazing light shows over endless ridges! Look for spot lighting too.
5. Sunrise and Sunsets can be amazing after a storm has just passed with soft, glowy light!
6. Clear skies? No sweat - Switch in to night mode and break out the Astrophotography and tracking gear and go for it!
7. Super green landscape? It's ok, it's time to jump in to some Infrared Red photography and go to town. You can buy filters on line. Don't forget your tripod!
8. Low water levels - No problem! It's a perfect time to get down to the creeks and search for more intimate compositions that might not be there when the water is higher. Use your cell phone to help scout lower angles.
9. Look for reflections. Clear blue skies and backlighting can add beautiful blue and gold tones in to abstract water reflections.
10. The Grand landscape is too contrasty and overpowered by top down light? All good! It's time to get down low and find those little things. Macro photography is perfect for a day like this and will test your skills in focus stacking, so bring your tripod. Try your macro set up or a good mid range lens for the best results. Search for unique mushrooms after a good rain and water droplets are the best!
